Play is essential for children’s growth, especially ages 0-8, supporting physical, mental, and socio-emotional well-being. Yet, in today’s digital age, balancing play and screen time is a challenge for parents. How much is too much? When does it become harmful?
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics provides guidelines on physical play, screen time, and digital wellness, addressing concerns over early exposure and excessive screen use in children. Here is a summary of their recommendations.
For Infants and Toddlers (0-2 years): 1.No Screen Time: Children under 2 years should not be exposed to any screens 2. Avoid Screens During Meals and Sleep: Do not use screens to calm or feed your child 3. Engage in Physical Play: Encourage activities like storytelling, music, and play 4. Minimal Screen Time for Social Interaction: Occasionally, screen time can be used for video calls with distant family members.
For Preschoolers (2-5 years): 1. Limit to 1 Hour Per Day: Screen time of a maximum of 1 hour per day, with two sessions of 20-30 minutes 2. Supervised and Educational Content: Always supervise screen time and ensure the content is age-appropriate, non-violent and promotes learning 3. No Screens During Meals and Before Sleep: Avoid screen use during meals and within one hour before sleep 4. Encourage Physical Activity: Ensure your child gets at least 3 hours of physical activity daily and 10-14 hours of good quality sleep
For Young Children (5-8 years): 1. Limit to Less Than 2 Hours Per Day: Screen time should be less than 2 hours per day, including time for learning 2. Monitor Screen Use: Ensure screen time is mainly for learning and social interaction. Screen time for entertainment should be minimal 3. No Independent Devices: The device used should belong to a parent, and children should not have their own phone/tablet/laptop 4. Encourage Physical and Social Activity: Screen time should not replace playtime, study time, sleep or family time. Ensure children get 9-12 hours of sleep and at least one hour of physical activity daily
Excessive screen time can impact the physical and mental health of children. Screen exposure before bedtime can lead to sleep disturbances. Excessive screen stimulation can lead to vision, attention, mood and anxiety issues.
Here are some tips to tackle excessive screen time and promote healthy use: • Make meals and bedtime screen-free • Set a predictable screen schedule, but avoid using it as a reward. Lead by example • Ensure content is safe and age-appropriate • Prioritize physical play and social interactions • Encourage screen-free activities like art, reading, music, and games Every child is different, and no parent is perfect. What matters most is love, patience, and joyful moments together—because children learn best through play. Bachpan Manao! (Celebrate childhood).
