London Olympics: How Indian athletes fared on Day 2

A largely disappointing day for India at the London Olympics 2012 with nothing much to write home about. Major disappointments would definitely be Jwala Gutta-Ponnappa in women's doubles and Jwala-Diju in mixed doubles badminton; Sania Mirza in her women's doubles; Shiva Thapa in boxing among others.

Soumyajit Ghosh raised some Indian hopes though as he won his table tennis first round match against the Brazilian opponent.

The Indian men's archery team was knocked out of the Olympic Games after losing to Japan in a tense pre-quarterfinal shoot-off at the Lord's Cricket Ground.

Yet another disappointment was Soniya Chanu, who managed just a 171kg cumulative score in her weightlifting 48kg category. She was over 30kgs short of the Gold medal winner.

India's Swarn Singh Virk finished fourth in the heats of the single sculls event of rowing competition in the London Olympics. He will compete in the repechage on Sunday to keep his hopes alive.

Vijender Singh (left) has a lot of expectations pinned on him. And the Indian boxer did not disappoint. He punched his way to a 14-10 win over Danabek Suzhanov of Kazakhstan.

Teenage boxing sensation Shiva Thapa's Olympic debut ended in disappointment as he was spanked by his Mexican rival Oscar Valdez Fierro in the bantamweight opening round bout in the London Games. Lots was expected but the inexperience finally hampered his chances.

Indian women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa lost their opening group match to the Japanese duo of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa at the London Olympics badminton tournament. Jwala fell to her second consecutive loss of the day.
