Relief To Come For Flood-Hit Chennai After 5 Days Of Incessant Rain In Tamil Nadu

The depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cross the coast by today evening, soon to bring an end to the extremely heavy rains in Tamil Nadu since Sunday, November 7, that have left several parts of the state -- including Chennai -- severely waterlogged and flooded.

Heavy rains continued to pound Chennai and its nearby areas yesterday evening and this morning, affecting vehicular movement and causing waterlogging in the city.

A 'red alert', indicating heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, was issued for 20 districts across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on November 10 and 11.

Tamil Nadu has been battered by heavy rains over the past few days, having received 46 per cent excess rain so far, as compared to the historical average.

12 people have died, and at least 540 houses and huts have been damaged and more than 1,700 people were in relief camps, as of yesterday.

The popular Marina beach in Chennai was left waterlogged and flooded after heavy downpour as a result of a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal.

Chennai airport today suspended all flights arriving between 1.15 pm and 6 pm in view of severe rains and heavy crosswinds.

The severe rains in Tamil Nadu this week have turned out to be the heaviest in recent years since the 2015 floods.
