Thousands Evacuated in Bihar Amid Flood Alert; Situation Under Control

The landslide in Nepal triggered by heavy rains on Saturday has killed nine and left scores of people missing and has created a mud dam blocking the Sunkoshi river, which runs into Bihar as the Kosi river.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the flood situation and directed that all possible assistance be made available.

Nearly 36000 people have been evacuated from the Kosi region since yesterday.

Villagers who left their homes along the Kosi River looking for safer places rest at a way side relief camp at Birpur Bihar on Sunday. A massive landslide in northern Nepal, early Saturday blocked a mountain river, causing the water to form a lake that was threatening to burst and sweep several villages. Because of the risk of flash floods coming from Nepal, thousands of villagers have been evacuated in neighboring Indias Bihar state.
