Coimbatore:

A man was caught with Rs 14.2 lakh in unaccounted cash by authorities on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. He was travelling from Coimbatore to Thrissur in poll-bound Kerala on a bus when the police intercepted him.

The passenger, identified as Vino from Ernakulam, was travelling with the wad of cash concealed in his shirt in violation of the Model Code of Conduct, in place due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Under the Model Code, people are only allowed to travel with Rs 50,000 and must have necessary documents to carry more than the permitted amount.

A case has been registered and an investigation is on, the police said.

Kerala goes to polls on Friday. While elections are over in Tamil Nadu, flying squads continue to monitor the movement of unaccounted cash in districts bordering states that are yet to complete the election exercise.

Recently, the Election Commission said that Rs 4,000 crore worth of seizures - at least Rs 1,000 crore more than seizures ahead of 2019 polls - were made before the first phase of polls on April 19.

However, the poll panel was criticised for failing to convict those accused of giving cash and freebies for votes.

Calling the Commission's efforts "superficial", the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court last week directed the poll panel to furnish the status of these cases and details of convictions.
