Surat Girl Found Dead May Have Been Held Captive, Tortured, Raped: Cops

An 11-year-old girl found dead in Gujarat's Surat city was possibly held captive, tortured and raped before being killed, the police said on Sunday, the latest in a string of cases that have sparked protests across the country.

The trials in the gruesome Kathua rape and murder case begin today against eight accused who allegedly held an 8-year-old girl in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district for a week in January this year during which she was kept sedated and sexually assaulted before being bludgeoned to death.

As anger and grief surge through India over the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, industrialist Anand Mahindra reflected that sentiment in an unusually sharp tweet.

Even as the nation struggles to come to terms with the brutality of the Kathua rape and murder case, another horrific incident has emerged from Surat. A nine-year-old girl's body has been found with over 80 injuries, including some on her private parts, reports news agency ANI.

A class five student in Assam's Nagaon district was set on fire after she was allegedly gang-raped by three minors on Friday. The girl, who had suffered 90 per cent burn injuries, died late at night.
