Primary caregiver to her three younger siblings, 16-year-old Kusum (name changed) from Madhubani in Bihar had stepped out of her house to fetch water from the hand pump near her house. Seeing that there was no one around, the accused Amresh pounced on her and forcibly took her to the nearby bushes, and sexually assaulted her. Compounding Kusum's suffering was the ostracisation faced by her family who belongs to very poor socio-economic strata. The accused's family resorted to threatening calls and open intimidation adding to the family's mental trauma.

Satya Prakash, who is a Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation (KSCF) Activist said, their organisation works for child victims of assault. He added,
It is their organisation's purpose, especially in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases, to be the voice of the victims and their families who are not getting justice. We raise their issues with the government, or in the court.
Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation has been in close touch with the distraught family and will also be supporting Musahar Seva Sangh, an organisation that works for socially backward communities in Bihar, to ensure the child gets justice.
Pandit Bhuran, a member of Musahar Seva Sangh said,
The moment Musahar Seva Sangh found out about this incident, we came here. On talking to the girl, it was clear that she had been gang-raped. Her clothes were soaked in blood, and she was completely disoriented.
