As a part of the Justice For Every Childcampaign, a 5-hour special telethon was organised and experts, social workers and celebrities came together to discuss on how together the community can help protect the future of India - children. Joining the telethon with NDTV's Dr Prannoy Roy, Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi explains about the vision of the campaign and why it is necessary today.
Each time when a daughter or son of a mother is sexually abused or raped, she cries. Each time we fail to deliver justice to a child on time, her mother cries and her heart is shaken and head hangs down in shame and each time things like Laitpur happen, when a police station officer raped a 13-year-old who went to lodge a complaint of gang rape that happened against her, her mother not only cries but there is a stigma on her head. Today as we celebrate Mother's Day, I want to say sorry to Mother India we couldn't protect her children. What could be more shameful than this. It was not the first time but this happened couple of times in the past for this girl, this delay in justice is intolerable.
Each hour, 5 children are abused and 3 are sexually raped in India. It is a shame for everyone and our constitution, as we are such a great country.
Apart from the social awareness that has been created with Justice For Every Child campaign immensely, we have come out with a lot of individual success stories and data. In one year 8,261 interventions have been made in these POCSO cases. Around 1000 legal interventions are taking place and we have worked on 5000 cases, by appointing lawyers in more than 50 districts across the country.
Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation (KSCF) has been able to rescue 10,000 children from trafficking, where they could ben pushed into slavery.
Our efforts are always to reach every child which has gone through this (sexual exploitation), but we have made a string of 100 organisations and volunteers through training that are helping reach houses of victims to give counselling to make families ready to fight case against sexual abuse. This effort is on to reach these families.
