About the Campaign

Diarrhoea remains one of the leading causes of child mortality in India, with dehydration being a critical factor. Recognising this urgent issue, the makers of ORSL have launched the "Diarrhoea Se Darr Nahi" initiative in partnership with Population Services International India (PSI India) to combat diarrhoea-related deaths among under five children.

This initiative aims to reach approximately 5 million children over the next two years, focusing on reducing diarrhoea-related mortality and improving health outcomes in 10 high-burden districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The programme aligns with the Government’s "Stop Diarrhoea" campaign, which seeks to achieve zero child deaths due to diarrhoea in India.

Pledge now

Every child deserves a chance to thrive. Together, let us create a healthier future and take a step towards stopping diarrhoea for good.

I Pledge To

  • I will spread awareness about the critical importance of W.H.O Oral Rehydration Solution in preventing dehydration and saving lives during diarrhoea.

  • I will motivate families to use W.H.O Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) in its various forms to protect their children’s health.

Facts On Diarrhoea

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhoeal disease occur globally each year.

  • The WHO states that in India, diarrhoea is the third leading cause of death among children aged 1-59 months.

  • As per the WHO, diarrhoea is also a major contributor to malnutrition in children under 5 years of age.

  • According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), Bihar has the highest number of diarrhoea cases in India.

  • The WHO highlights that inadequate sanitation, unsafe drinking water, and poor hygiene practices are key factors contributing to the prevalence of diarrhoea in India.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT DIARRHOEA?

  • ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER

  • HANDWASHING WITH SOAP

  • IMPROVED SANITATION

  • EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING

  • GOOD FOOD HYGIENE

Why ors solution?

  • W.H.O Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) solution, a mixture of clean water, salt, and sugar, is the primary treatment for diarrhoea. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), It helps lost fluids and electrolytes preventing dehydration and further complications due to dehydration.

  • The WHO estimates that ORS alone can prevent up to 93 per cent of diarrhoea-related deaths.

  • According to the Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Science, even with treatment, 85 per cent of the time, improper mixing of ORS powder with water can reduce its efficacy.

  • The WHO states that Reduced Osmolarity ORS can: reduce hospitalisations by 33 per cent; reduce vomiting by 30 per cent, and reduce stool output by 20 per cent

What experts have to say

  • Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is the key to recovery! To stay safe and hydrated, always choose the WHO-approved ORS solutions."

  • "Diarrhoea is a common health concern in India, especially among children aged 1 to 5 years, and has historically led to a significant number of deaths. However, with the introduction of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), these fatalities have drastically declined. Diarrhoea depletes essential body fluids and salts, and ORS helps replenish them, making it a crucial tool in both treatment and prevention."

  • "Diarrhoea is manageable as long as it is treated with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). Keeping your child hydrated is essential, and antibiotics are usually not required for treatment."

  • "Diarrhoea can be of three types—viral, bacterial, or antibiotic-induced. The simple and effective solution is Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), which helps restore lost electrolytes and keeps the body hydrated."
