Child Junctions: A Holistic Approach to Early Childhood in Every Village

In the remote village of Baniyani in Uttar Pradesh, where access to early childhood care and education is limited, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) has developed an innovative initiative called Child Junction. This vibrant, open-air space offers young children aged one to eight a safe and stimulating environment to explore, play, and learn. In the absence of a nearby Anganwadi centre, Child Junction fills a critical gap by providing opportunities for holistic early development.

The space is designed to be multi-sensory and inclusive, featuring tactile walls, climbing structures, swings, sound walls, and a textured pathway. These elements are not only fun but are also carefully curated to support the physical, cognitive, and emotional growth of children. A community book kiosk with over 250 picture and storybooks fosters early literacy and a love for reading. The presence of age-appropriate puzzles and educational tools further enhances children’s learning through exploration.

One of the standout features of Child Junction is its Children’s Parliament, which engages children in leadership and decision-making. Kids take responsibility for managing aspects of the space such as cleanliness, reading corners, and play equipment. This not only boosts their confidence but also teaches them collaboration and ownership from an early age.

Child Junction operates after school hours, ensuring children do not miss out on their regular studies. AKF’s approach focuses on learning through play, rooted in the belief that playful environments support emotional well-being and foundational skills that shape lifelong learning. By engaging local families and children in the management of the space, the model ensures sustainability and community ownership. This initiative exemplifies how thoughtful, low-cost design combined with community participation can transform early childhood experiences in rural India.

Ultimately, the initiative highlights how creating joyful, inclusive spaces can nurture curiosity, imagination, and resilience among young children giving them a strong start in life, even in the most resource-constrained settings.
