Yearender 2020, Tennis: Shock Year For Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal Records 20th Grand Slam Win

Novak Djokovic defended his title beating Dominic Thiem over five sets for a record-extending eighth Australian Open title. America's Sofia Kenin defeated Garbine Muguruza to win her maiden Grand Slam.

The men's Davis Cup and the women's Fed Cup tennis finals were both postponed to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Wimbledon, the only Grand Slam on grass court, was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. This was the first time since World War 2 that the iconic event did not take place.

Thiem produced a historic comeback in the US Open final to beat Alexander Zverev and clinch his maiden Grand Slam title. He became the first player in the event's open era history to bounce back from two sets down to win the title.

This year's US Open was the first men's singles Major event since 2004 to not feature the big-three -- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic -- in the quarter-finals. While Federer and Nadal didn't take part in the tournament, Djokovic was disqualified from the event for hitting a ball at line judge.

French Open: Nadal outclassed Djokovic in straight sets in the final to win his 20th Grand Slam title. Poland's Iga Swiatek defeated Sofia Kenin to win her country's first-ever Grand Slam singles title. She also became the youngest women's French Open champion since 1992.

Daniil Medvedev came from behind to beat US Open champion Thiem and win the biggest title of his career thus far -- the ATP Finals title. In the process, he also became first man to beat all three of the world's top-ranked players at the season finale.

Sumit Nagal became the first Indian since 2013 to reach the second round of a Grand Slam men's singles event when he defeated Bradley Klahn of the United States 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open.

Djokovic finished the year on top of the ATP rankings for the sixth time in his career, thus equalling the record of his childhood hero Pete Sampras. Prior to this year, the Serbian had finished the season on top spot in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018.

Australia's Ashleigh Barty finished the year on top of women's singles rankings and was followed by Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka on second and third spots respectively. Djokovic finished the year on top of the ATP rankings, with Nadal and Thiem completing the top three.
