As India celebrates 70 years of independence, President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the nation as part of a decades old tradition. This was his first Independence Day address after he was sworn in last month. Since his election, President Kovind has given assent to six legislations within three weeks after taking charge. One of the legislations was extension of jurisdiction of trial in cases of maritime claims, arrests and detentions of ships to various courts. Last year, former president Pranab Mukherjee had asserted that intolerance and violence is betrayal of the letter and spirit of democracy. (Video courtesy: DD National)
