Empowering Women, Empowering Communities: The Story Of USHA Silai Schools In Jammu And Kashmir

In a world where women's voices are increasingly being amplified, there is one story that stands out for its transformative power and impact on the lives of countless women and their families. USHA Silai Schools, a collaboration between USHA International and the Government of India, has been empowering women through its Silai Centres, equipping them with skills and resources to break free from economic dependence and build a brighter future.

One such story belongs to Nazima Gul, a USHA Silai School teacher from Srinagar, who is determined to create a ripple effect of change in her community. With her unwavering dedication and passion, Nazima is helping rural women learn basic silai, giving them the skills to start their own businesses and reach a wider market.

For Nazima and countless women entrepreneurs like her, upskilling is not just an option, but a necessity in today's rapidly changing business environment. Continuous learning helps entrepreneurs like Nazima stay competitive and relevant. With USHA Silai Schools, women like Nazima gain access to advanced training, mentorship, and networking opportunities that enable them to build their businesses and contribute to the global economy in unprecedented ways.

Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, emphasizes the impact of USHA's collaborative efforts, stating,

"USHA is not just working in Kashmir, but all over the country. Since 2018, we have had a collaborative association with them. We opened several centres in different districts with girls who had acumen, dedication, hard work, and some skill."

Beyond technical skills, mentorship and networking play a vital role in upskilling. Online forums, mentorship programs, and business accelerators have become lifelines for women entrepreneurs, providing them with platforms to exchange knowledge, ideas, and support.

Prof. Shazia Manzoor, Head of the Department of Social Work at the University of Kashmir, remarks,

"The transformation that has happened in these women is not just economic, but also social and physiological. They have been able to identify their barriers and channelize their energy in a proper manner."

The next level of empowerment lies in digital literacy. Shayista Ayoub, Project Manager, USHA, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, notes,

"We have plans to connect them to an institution that provides digital education, and they can take orders directly. They should not be dependent on us or others for getting these orders."

The impact of upskilling extends beyond individual success. Women entrepreneurs like Nazima are also empowering others in their communities. Nazima's plan to establish a factory where she can employ many women and provide them with skills and resources is a testament to the transformative power of USHA Silai Schools.

Collaborative Change: How Partnerships Elevate Women In Rural India

Nazima said,

"I want every girl to be independent and not rely on anyone."

The future of entrepreneurship is indeed bright, and it is being led by women who are determined to never stop learning. USHA Silai Schools have become a beacon of hope for countless women, providing them with the skills and resources they need to break free from economic dependence and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

In a word, the story of USHA Silai Schools is one of empowerment, transformation, and hope. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and collective effort in creating a more inclusive and diverse world.

About the Initiative

Kushalta Ke Kadam, an initiative by USHA Silai School and NDTV has entered its eighth season. The aim is to empower more women across rural India by teaching them sewing skills and helping them open new doors of opportunities for themselves. The initiative encourages rural women to become financially independent and entrepreneurs by taking up sewing and training others in their respective communities.

Since 2011, the USHA Silai School initiative has trained more than 12 lakh rural women through over 33,000 Silai schools, spanning over 20,751 villages across India.

The women earn Rs. 4,000 – 5,000 per month on an average, with the highest recorded monthly earning being Rs. 84,000 in a month. This earning works as a catalyst towards building their self-confidence, reducing gender inequities, and raising their stature within their families and in society at large.
