New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the World Economic Forum's online Davos Agenda Summit today said despite dire predictions, India beat all odds in the global fight against the coronavirus. "Last year, in February-March, a lot of experts had said the India will be the worst-affected country, there will be tsunami of cases. They predicted 2 million deaths in the country. But India moved ahead with a proactive public participation," PM Modi said, addressing the World Economic Forum's Davos Dialogue.
PM Modi also said India had launched the world's biggest vaccination programme. "In just 12 days, India has vaccinated more than 2.3 million healthcare workers," he said.
The eight-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will contest elections in six states that go to polls next year, its chief Arvind Kejriwal said at the party's Ninth National Council meeting on Thursday.
"The AAP will contest Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab," Mr Kejriwal said pushing for action against those responsible for the January 26 violence in Delhi after the farmers' tractor rally went rogue.
Meanwhile, India's COVID-19 tally of cases crossed 1.07 crore with 11,666 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 1,03,73,606 pushing the national recovery rate to 96.94 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.
The total infections have mounted to 1,07,01,193. The death count increased to 1,53,847 with 123 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,03,73,606 pushing the national COVID-19 recovery rate to 96.94 per cent, while the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.44 per cent.

R-Day violence: Antiquities inside Red Fort missing, tableaux damaged, says Union minister
Union Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Patel on Thursday said some antiquities inside the Red Fort are missing and tableaux showcased at the Republic Day parade damaged, two days after a section of protesting farmers laid siege to the iconic structure.
During the tractor parade of farmers on Republic Day, a group of farmers had entered the Red Fort premises and climbed on to the ramparts.
"All the tableaux are kept in the Red Fort premises after the Republic Day celebrations. These are viewed by the public for seven to 15 days. When I went there, I saw that these have been damaged. These include the culture ministry tableau and the Ram Mandir tableau. In fact, all the tableaux have been messed with," said Mr Patel at a press briefing.
EU could ban vaccine exports under new checks
The European Union is setting up a Covid-19 vaccine export monitoring system giving member states an opportunity to ban shipments out of the bloc if they are not "legitimate", officials said Thursday.
European Council President Charles Michel welcomed the move in a letter to the leaders of four member states, saying: "The EU needs to take robust action to secure its supply of vaccines and demonstrate concretely that the protection of its citizens remains our absolute priority."
Some details of the new system were given by EU officials speaking to journalists on condition of anonymity a day ahead of its expected adoption by the European Commission.

India said on Thursday it had curbed an increase in COVID-19 infections, with a fifth of its districts reporting no new cases for a week, even as its immunisation campaign has covered 2.4 million people.
The country of 1.35 billion has recorded the highest number of cases in the world after the United States, though the rate of infection has come down significantly since a mid-September peak. Some studies have suggested pockets of India have attained herd immunity through natural infection.
"India has successfully contained the pandemic," Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said, noting that fewer than 12,000 cases were reported in the past 24 hours.
Vietnam reports first virus outbreak in nearly two months
Vietnam recorded its first coronavirus outbreak in almost two months on Thursday, with more than 80 new cases reported as authorities began testing tens of thousands of people to contain the spread.
The infections were detected in northern Vietnam, where one cluster has been linked to a case of the more contagious coronavirus variant first spotted in Britain.
The figure was a new daily record for the communist nation of 96 million people, which has been widely praised for its handling of the pandemic -- recording just over 1,500 cases before the new cluster and only 35 deaths.
The latest outbreak in the provinces of Hai Duong and Quang Ninh is "more complicated and serious" than anything Vietnam has dealt with before, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said.
Guidelines issued to states, UTs to ensure no wastage of COVID vaccines: Health secretary
The Union health ministry has issued detailed guidelines to the states and Union territories to ensure that there is no wastage of COVID-19 vaccines and for that purpose, the vaccinators at the session sites have been allowed to add additional beneficiaries, apart from the 100 scheduled for the day, in case they do not turn up.
Responding to a question at a press conference on how the ministry is dealing with vaccine wastage across the country, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Thursday said when the vaccination programme was rolled out, a 10-per cent wastage was factored in.
"We have issued detailed guidelines to the states and Union territories on how to avoid wastage of vaccines. We have made our digital platform more flexible and have permitted that apart from the scheduled 100 beneficiaries, the person handling the vaccination session at a particular site can add additional people as long as they are part of the database. This is being done to ensure that there is a lesser wastage of the vaccines."

Bahrain receives delivery of AstraZeneca vaccine from India
Bahrain has received its first delivery of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India, state media said on Thursday.

Too early to ease virus curbs in Europe, says WHO
The World Health Organization's European branch on Thursday said it was too early to ease virus restrictions in Europe despite a drop in new cases in most countries.
"Thirty countries have seen a significant decrease in 14-day cumulative incidence... Yet, transmission rates across Europe are still very high, impacting health systems and straining services, making it too early to ease-up," the WHO's regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said at an online press conference.
251 fresh COVID-19 cases take UP's tally to 5,99,624
The COVID-19 deaths in Uttar Pradesh rose to 8,642 on Thursday with six more fatalities, while 251 new cases pushed the infection tally to 5,99,624, an official here said.
"The state recorded 251 fresh cases in the past 24 hours while 380 patients were discharged in this period. There are 6,230 active cases while the total number of those discharged stands at 5,84,752," Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters.
With six more fatalities, the deaths in the state has increased to 8,642 and the total number of cases stands at 5,99,624.
Mr Prasad said of the total active cases, 1,722 are in home isolation, 534 are in private hospitals and the rest are undergoing treatment in government facilities.

Three new COVID-19 cases recorded in Arunachal Pradesh
