Republic Day Recap: 'The Beast', Barack Obama's Official Car, was a Big Hit Among Children

Here are some interesting facts about the 'Beast', in case you missed it earlier:

  1. 'The Beast', US President Barack Obama's official car is also known as 'Cadillac One'.
  1. It has been driving with both the US and the Indian flag since the arrival of President Obama.
  1. It looks like a Cadillac, but that is it. It is not really a derivative of the Cadillac DTS as it seems, since it only borrows styling from that model. Underneath the limo exterior is a Chevrolet Kodiak - which is a medium sized truck (sort of the same size as our Tata 407, but more sophisticated).
  1. Anyone can buy an armoured limo. Yes BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz even sell those in India. The Beast goes well beyond regular armouring with an 8-inch thick body plating and 5-inch thick bulletproof windows. The car itself weighs 8 tonnes.
  1. The doors swing on special heavy-duty hinges as they weigh as much as doors on a Boeing 757 aircraft.
  1. The massive weight needs every horsepower the 6.5 litre Duramax diesel engine can offer. The Beast uses this diesel truck engine since it can take to varying purity levels of the more commonly available fuel type globally.
  1. It's a 7-seater - yup just like all "family MPVs"! So this one can accommodate POTUS, his driver, chief Secret Service agent and four others too. So FLOTUS, the girls and grandma maybe?
  1. Goodyear makes special Kevlar-coated run-flat tyres for the Beast - to withstand puncture and even run when shot out.
  1. The fuel tank is covered with a special foam that prevents any impact-related explosion. It's boot has special oxygen tanks and firefighting equipment.
  1. In the event of a chemical attack, the car cuts off outside air completely, and keeps the cabin supplied with breathable air until it is safe to open the doors again.
  1. Night vision cameras, teargas cannons and a shotgun are standard on the Beast. It also houses a special compartment to hold pouches of POTUS' blood type.
  1. It runs with Washington DC plates - everywhere it goes.

Republic Day Recap: President Obama was fascinated by the 'BSF Daredevils' riders at the Republic Day on Monday, however he said he would 'not drive' a motorbike after watching the stunts performed by the riders at the parade.

  1. "I would, by the way, not drive a motorcycle after watching those incredible acrobats," Obama said, clearly overwhelmed by the performance of the 'Jaanbaaz' bike riders and their daring stunts.
  1. President Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama gave a thumbs up to the BSF daredevils, who are famed for their formation of a human pyramid on moving bikes during their stunning display at the parade.
  1. "Today's ceremony and the parade were truly spectacular, a moving tribute to India's founding, its democracy, its progress," President Obama said.

A recap of President Obama's day:

He was chief guest at this morning's Republic Day parade, braving the relentless Delhi rain and chill. Michelle Obama also attended, wearing a black coat dress and a red scarf. Highlights of the parade included all-women contingents from the services, a camel-mounted band, tableaux that depicted many of PM Modi's pet projects, the Indian Air Force's fly past, and motorcycle daredevilry from the BSF's stunt riders.

At about 4pm, the Obamas visited President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan for tea. FLOTUS changed into a flowered dress and cropped jacket. The Obamas had tea, shook hands, chatted to other guests and waved to the cameras.

At about 6pm, POTUS made the short journey from the Maurya Sheraton Hotel where he is staying to the Taj Palace next door to meet India's top CEOs with PM Modi
