Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has said in a tweet that he regrets missing the opportunity to welcome US President Barack Obama, who cancelled his plan to visit the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra today.

"Great to be a part of people to people relationship, between the two greatest democracies in the world," he added on his official Facebook page.

Mr Yadav attended the dinner hosted by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday for Mr Obama and his wife Michelle Obama and also posted a picture of the presidential banquet.

The Obamas had originally planned to visit Agra on Tuesday to see the iconic Taj Mahal. They cancelled the visit at the last minute; the US President will now fly to Saudi Arabia whose king Abdullah died last Thursday.
