Obama visit: Day 3 highlights

New Delhi: US President Barack Obama is on a four day presidential visit to India, his longest overseas visit as the President. Here are the highlights of the third day of his visit.

  • President Obama and Michelle arrive at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister welcomes them; a 21-gun salute played out.
  • Obamas visit the Rajghat, pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi
  • Obama reaches Hyderabad House for bilateral talks with PM Manmohan Singh and the Indian delegation. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Minister SM Krishna present for the bilateral talks.
  • After a restricted meeting, delegation-level talks begin. National Security Advisor and Foreign Secretary join in.
  • Barack Obama, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh address a joint press conference.
  • PM: We have decided to accelerate deepening of Indo-US ties. America's backing for India in NSG is a sign of growing trust.
  • PM: I thank Obama for help in countering terror post 26/11.
  • Obama: Relationship between India, US indispensable. Discussed Afghanistan, thanked India for development there.
  • The two leaders take questions. 
    • On Kashmir - PM: We are not afraid of the K-word. Obama: Obviously, this is a long-standing dispute. Both Pakistan and India have an interest in reducing tension. The US can't propose a solution but is happy to play any role the parties are OK with.
  • Obama reaches Parliament House; Vice-President Hamid Ansari welcomes Obama to hearty applause. Obama signs the Golden Book.
  • Obama addresses joint session of both Houses of Parliament. Former US President Bill Clinton spoke without a teleprompter, Barack Obama has one.
  • Obama: India is not emerging, India has emerged. Obama quotes Rabindranath Tagore, invokes Gandhi.
  • Obama: We welcome India as it prepares to take its seat on the United Nations Security Council.
  • Obama ends speech by saying: Thank you, Jai Hind!
  • Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar gives the Vote of Thanks.
  • Obamas attend the State Dinner hosted by President Pratibha Patil. Rahman's anthem 'Jai Ho' and the eternal 'Awara Hoon', as the Naval Band plays music to entertain the US President and his wife Michelle.
  • The 16-member Shillong Choir enthralls Obama with English, Hindi and even Khasi numbers.
  • Obama: You don't simply visit India, you experience India
  • Obama: India doing well because of its women leaders
