New Delhi: The three-day-long G20 Leaders' Summit 2025 began in South Africa on Friday. This year's gathering carries special significance as it is the first time the Summit is being hosted on the African continent. The theme for the summit is “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.”
South Africa has focused on key priorities during the summit, including strengthening disaster resilience, ensuring debt sustainability for low-income countries, mobilising finance for a just energy transition, and harnessing critical minerals to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Johannesburg last evening to attend the three-day summit.
He has proposed six new initiatives aimed at global development at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg. These include the setting up of a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, the Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, the Global Healthcare Response Team, the Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus, the Open Satellite Data Partnership, and a Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative.
PM Modi also held discussions on different issues with multiple world leaders here and said they together reaffirmed their "shared commitment to global progress and prosperity".
He met his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, French President Emmanuel Macron, South Korea's President Lee Jae-myung, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders' Summit hosted by South Africa.

"In the year when the planet surpassed for the first time -- and perhaps permanently -- the limit of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, the international community faced a choice: to continue or to give up. We chose the first option," he said in South Africa after the COP30 draft was reached.

Energy security, climate action, and disaster resilience and response were also prominently mentioned in the text of the Declaration that was adopted by the heads of state attending the Summit by consensus despite US attempts to stop it.
"We understand our interconnectedness as a global community of nations and reaffirm our commitment to ensure that no one is left behind through multilateral cooperation, macro policy coordination, global partnerships for sustainable development and solidarity," the 39-page Declaration read.

"We seek to ensure that the value chain of critical minerals can better withstand disruptions, whether due to geopolitical tensions, unilateral trade measures inconsistent with WTO rules, pandemics, or natural disasters," the 30-page leaders' declaration said.
