With 3 Outfit Changes, PM Modi's So Far Beating Michelle Obama

New Delhi: When President Barack Obama landed in Delhi this morning, he was received by Prime Minster Modi, who broke with protocol to drive to the airport.

The PM was wearing a kurta-pyjama, his trademark Nehru vest, and a bright red stole.

POTUS wore a dark suit. His wife, Michelle, was in a blue and black outfit by Bibhu Mohapatra, an Indian designer who works out of New York. The designer tweeted, "The President and the First Lady arrive in #India. @flotus wearing @bibhumohapatra #spring15 poppy.
When President Obama arrived at Rashtrapati Bhawan for the ceremonial welcome that includes a 21-gun salute, the PM received him wearing a pinstripe 'bandhgala' suit.

It was a bandhgala again that he chose to wear in the evening for a banquet hosted for the Obamas by President Pranab Mukherjee. This time in grey colour.

Michelle Obama, who did not make a public appearance through the day, wore a floral dress, similar to the one she wore today morning on her arrival in New Delhi, to the banquet.

When the PM traveled to the US in September, his wardrobe generated attention in the local media. Three major US publications - Time, New York Times and the Washington Post - had commented on his sartorial choices.

The New York Times in an article titled 'A Leader Who Is What He Wears' had said "even by the standards of a world that has seen blogs devoted to Michelle Obama's dress sense, the pre-election makeovers of Francois Hollande and Dilma Rousseff, and the canonisation of Nelson Mandela's shirts, the image-craft of India's new prime minister, Narendra Modi - and its fashion fallout - has been something of a case study."
