The Australian Outback symbolises the essence of Australia and can reward you with unique experiences and some unforgettable memories.
To begin your Australian tour into wilderness, you will have to take the famous Stuart Highway. From here to Alice Springs it's like a marathon driving session with some 1221 kilometres of drive.
Some quick route check: Stuart Highway begins in Port Augusta, 305 km north of Adelaide. The total distance to Darwin is 2711 km. Just a warning, this is a very long drive through varying climatic zones.
Port Augusta, is on the edge of the South Australian Outback and it is here where the Stuart Highway begins its long journey up to Alice Springs and further north to Darwin, right across the red centre.
Marla is a small town with a huge roadhouse where Marla Travellers rest, right on the junction of Stuart Highway and the Oodnadatta Track.
The Stuart Highway, once known as "The Track", was named after explorer John McDouall Stuart who discovered a route through Australia's inland on several excursions in the 1850s and 1860s.
#GLAadventure's Recommendation: It's a good place if you want to take a photo of the famous Australian road-trains.
Uluru is better known as Ayers Rock and is named by William Gosse in 1873 after Sir Henry Ayers. The first sight of the mighty Uluru on the horizon will astound even the most jaded traveller!
Starling fact: This rock was created over 600 million years ago, and the Aborigines have been in the area for the last 10,000 years. Originally it sat at the bottom of a sea, but today stands 348m above ground.
The rock is some 3.6km long and rises a towering 348m from the surrounding sandy scrubland (867m above sea level). It's also believed that two-thirds of the rock lies beneath the sand.
Just in case you are wondering how long it takes to walk around Uluru - It is a 10km walk on a flat marked dirt path, and can be completed in around 3.5 hours.
