A bizarre incident in Kerala's Kottayam left commuters stunned after a driver apparently stopped his car in the middle of a busy road and fell fast asleep behind the wheel. The incident took place at Athirampuzha Palli Junction on the Athirampuzha-Ettumanoor Road on Wednesday, August 19, during the evening rush hour. The red car was left stationary in an active lane, blocking traffic and causing a significant jam as motorists struggled to get past.

Locals initially feared the driver may have suffered a medical emergency. In a video that has gone viral on social media, several people can be seen gathering around the car and shaking it in an attempt to wake him. However, the driver reportedly remained fast asleep, apparently unfazed by the commotion around him. He was also seen with an earphone plugged into one ear.

When police arrived, they reportedly found alcohol bottles and soda inside the vehicle. Local reports identified the driver as Jobin Johny, a resident of Kangazha in Kottayam district.

Police reportedly took Johny and the vehicle into custody. A case was registered for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and obstructing traffic, with further legal proceedings underway.

The incident caused considerable disruption on the busy Athirampuzha-Ettumanoor route before the obstruction was eventually cleared.

On social media, the video received mixed reactions. While some users criticised the driver, others were amused by the incident. One user wrote, "It is because of such people that accidents are continuously increasing, the strictest possible action should be taken against them."

Another commented, "I am honestly happy that he decided to park and sleep on the side rather than falling asleep while driving and causing accidents."
