Primary classes in Delhi will reopen on Wednesday while the 50% work-for-home order for government employees has been revoked, environment minister Gopal Rai announced today.
"Primary schools will reopen from November 9 and the order asking 50 per cent of the government staff to work from home is being revoked," the minister said.
As the air quality in the city improved, Mr Rai also announced a lift on the ban on construction work related to highways, roads, flyovers, etc. However, curbs will continue on private construction work, he said.
"It has been decided to lift the curbs imposed under stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan in compliance with the direction from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)," Mr Rai said.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi on Monday morning remained in the 'very poor' quality, improving on the 'severe' category that was recorded for three consecutive days.
Despite the marginal improvement, the AQI stood at 352 at 9 am.
On Sunday, CAQM, the central body that recommends plans to fight pollution in the national capital region, removed some of the restrictions put in place by the Delhi government earlier.
The central body lifted the ban on the entry of trucks into Delhi. The ban on non-BS 6 diesel vehicles has been removed.
Entry of trucks into Delhi is now allowed, however, BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers will remain banned under stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), Mr Rai said.
Only nine of Delhi's 37 air quality monitoring stations were working on Diwali when the city was covered by a toxic smog of chemicals from 'green' firecrackers, vehicular pollution, and particulate matter from farm fires Supreme Court was told.
Delhi's air quality worsened on Sunday as weak winds trapped pollutants, raising the overall AQI to 366 in the "very poor" category with three monitoring stations recording "severe" air above 400, Centre Pollution Control Board data showed.
As Delhi woke up to another smoggy morning and Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas climbed to the 'severe' category, senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called upon the Centre and the BJP-led Delhi government to act immediately.
The national capital witnessed a sharp deterioration in air quality on Sunday morning, with pollution levels slipping deep into the 'very poor' category and touching 'severe' levels in several parts of Delhi-NCR.

Friday December 20, 2024While some may argue that people in Delhi are now more aware of air pollution than they were a decade back, my rebuttal would be that awareness does not mean that people are concerned.

Tuesday December 10, 2024Delhi welcomed us with monsoon rains and mangos. We were home. Fast forward a couple of years, in the winter of 2012, I found myself in denial about something other parents, mostly expats, were calling toxic air.

Friday November 22, 2024On a good day, such as today, the AQI reading in Delhi is 407. We are jubilant at the sickly sunshine trickling through the slightly dissipated smog. At least its not 1600.
