Operation Sindoor Highlights: The Indian armed forces thwarted fresh attempts by the Pakistani military to target northern and western cities using drones and missiles on Thursday evening, sources said, adding that at least eight missiles have been brought down so far. All airports are on alert in response to heightened security concerns.
The drone and missile attacks by the neighbouring country were reported in Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir, prompting authorities to activate the defence systems, sirens and enforce a complete blackout in most areas. Sources said a Pakistan F-16 was shot down by the Indian forces although an official confirmation is awaited.
The developments came hours after India said it had foiled Pakistan's attempts to engage a number of military targets across 15 cities in northern and western India using drones and missiles on Thursday night. A Pakistani air defence system in Lahore was also destroyed.
Early on Wednesday, India unleashed 24 missiles in 25 minutes on nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives on April 22. Security drills were also held for "effective civil defence in the event of a hostile attack" across 244 districts in the country.

The government's official statement on the developments late last night says that the Operation Sindoor airstrikes on the terror infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed were "focused, measured and non-escalatory". "It was specifically mentioned that Pakistani military establishments had not been targeted. It was also reiterated that any attack on military targets in India will invite a suitable response," it said.
But late last night, Pakistan tried to target military targets in Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, with drones and missiles.
Indian armed forces responded this morning by targeting Air Defence radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan, including Lahore.
In its February 17, 2020, judgement, the top court said that absolute exclusion of women from all positions, except staff assignments, in the Army was indefensible and their blanket non-consideration for command appointments without any justification cannot be sustained in law.
The top court referred to the distinctions achieved by women officers, and put out an example of Colonel Qureshi's achievements.
"Lieutenant Colonel Sophia Qureshi (Army Signal Corps) is the first woman to lead an Indian Army contingent at a multi-national military exercise named 'Exercise Force 18', which is the largest ever foreign military exercise hosted by India.
"She has served in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operation in Congo in 2006, where she, along with others, was in charge of monitoring ceasefires in those countries and aiding in humanitarian activities. Her job included ensuring peace in the conflict affected areas," the top court had said.
"I must say that our signalling today to Pakistan and the international community was very well done. The briefing this morning, for example, was conducted by the Foreign Secretary (Vikram Misri), a Kashmiri Pandit. He was flanked by two women officers -- which was a wonderful gesture -- one of whom was a Muslim, to demonstrate this is not a Hindu-Muslim issue, as some Pakistanis are trying to portray," he said.
During an interview with CNN after the strike, Asif tried to spread fake news about Pakistan shooting down Indian fighter jets during the strike. When asked for proof, he fumbled.
"It's all over social media, on Indian social media, not just our social media. The debris of these jets fell into Kashmir," he claimed.
The CNN anchor Becky Anderson quickly interjected, saying, "I'm sorry, we didn't ask you here to talk about social media content. I'm asking specifically for the evidence, details. For example, was any Chinese equipment used to down these Rafale jets, as I understand you are alleging to be?"
PM Modi stressed the need for seamless coordination among ministries and agencies to uphold operational continuity and institutional resilience.
A range of issues were discussed during the meeting. These included, among others, strengthening of civil defence mechanisms, efforts to counter misinformation and fake news, and ensuring the security of critical infrastructure. Ministries were also advised to maintain close coordination with state authorities and ground-level institutions, as per the official release.
Ms Prasanna's husband Madhusudan Rao was shot dead by terrorists at the Baisaran meadow in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22. "PM Modi took the onus to take revenge. This must bring some relief to families. People think we lost our husbands, but we have lost our lives," she told ANI, on being asked about the significance of Operation Sindoor's name.
"26 families are shattered now. This should not happen to anyone in India," the Kerala-based woman said.
"Defence Minister said today's meeting shows we don't do politics just to form government, but to run the country. It shows that India is a mature democracy," he added.

"The Indian army's action against the terrorists in Pakistan is a matter of pride. The Indian army is a professional army, and it has a reputation for not attacking anyone without a reason, like Pakistan. You have killed 26 innocent civilians of ours, and still we attacked and destroyed only terrorist camps and no civilian area or military sites. We have the right to protect ourselves, and our army has done that," Mr Raut told ANI.
Speaking to the media, CM Gupta said, "Pakistan has also understood that the crime they have committed, the way they have continuously spread terrorism in India, the government and our army have given a befitting reply to it and if this continues from their side, then perhaps our army will take even bigger steps and they should be ready for that because 140 crore people of the country are ready. The country is united and every person is ready for any struggle."
The newly released high-resolution satellite images show clear before-and-after comparisons of two prominent targets: the Markaz Subhan Allah compound near Bahawalpur and the Markaz Taiba complex in Nangal Sadhan, Muridke. The extent of destruction was seen in the May 7 imagery, with collapsed roofs, craters, and debris.

He advised people to remain calm and not hoard rations. He also suggested that people refrain from sharing unauthenticated information on social media.
"If there's a mock drill, don't come to the conclusion that there's an attack. This will go on. Don't hoard ration. Some are taking advantage of the problem and selling rations at a higher price. We will get out of this situation. Don't share things on social media which are not authentic," Mr Aujla added.
In coordination with the Indian counterpart, the Sashstra Seema Bal (SSB), the APF has started round-the-clock patrolling following the situation after the Operation Sindoor on Wednesday. The two forces have stepped up joint patrols and real-time information sharing. APF teams are now patrolling the border round-the-clock from one Border Outpost (BOP) to another.
Meanwhile, several residents in Amritsar and Batala resorted to panic buying of grocery items like pulses, cooking oil, wheat flour, sugar, and salt. People were seen queuing up at departmental stores and grocery shops for bulk buying.
Many people lined up at fuel pumps in Amritsar. Villagers in Ferozepur said they have begun shifting their belongings even though there has been no official evacuation orders from the Border Security Force, Indian Army, or any government agency so far. They said the decision to move, especially women and children, was their own."If pilot training can be useful for the country, then I, Tej Pratap Yadav, am always ready to serve the country. "During the night of May 7-8, 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using Small Arms and Artillery Guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor areas in J&K. Indian Army responded proportionately," read a statement from the Indian Army.
The unprovoked firing comes a day after India launched the Pahalgam counterstrike 'Operation Sindoor'. India carried out 24 precision missile strikes on nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) on Wednesday (May 7) early morning. The nine terror camps were strongholds of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).
