Operation Sindoor Highlights: The Indian armed forces thwarted fresh attempts by the Pakistani military to target northern and western cities using drones and missiles on Thursday evening, sources said, adding that at least eight missiles have been brought down so far. All airports are on alert in response to heightened security concerns.
The drone and missile attacks by the neighbouring country were reported in Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir, prompting authorities to activate the defence systems, sirens and enforce a complete blackout in most areas. Sources said a Pakistan F-16 was shot down by the Indian forces although an official confirmation is awaited.
The developments came hours after India said it had foiled Pakistan's attempts to engage a number of military targets across 15 cities in northern and western India using drones and missiles on Thursday night. A Pakistani air defence system in Lahore was also destroyed.
Early on Wednesday, India unleashed 24 missiles in 25 minutes on nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives on April 22. Security drills were also held for "effective civil defence in the event of a hostile attack" across 244 districts in the country.

In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has put in place enhanced security arrangements.

India Steps Up Measures Across Airports Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
In response to heightened security concerns, the Indian government has implemented strict new measures at airports across the country. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) announced immediate protocols on Thursday, including:
- Mandatory secondary security checks for all passengers before boarding
- Restricted terminal access, allowing only passengers with valid tickets
- Full CCTV surveillance required at all airports
- Increased deployment of air marshals on flights
- Tighter vehicle and passenger checks at entry points, including random baggage screening
The enhanced security comes during a period of escalated tensions, with authorities prioritising aviation safety.
Leave Cancelled, Schools Shut: Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan Among States On High Alert
Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, many states have announced the closure of schools, blackouts in border districts, and cancellation of leave of police personnel and administration officials.
Punjab shares a 532-km border with Pakistan, Rajasthan about 1,070 km and Gujarat around 506 km. West Bengal shares a 2,217-km border with Bangladesh.
In Punjab, the leave of all police personnel has been cancelled while the state government has shut schools in six border districts, officials said on Thursday.
According to a communication to the civil surgeons of all the districts across Haryana, it has been mentioned that all officials will have to remain present at their current places of posting and shall not leave the district headquarters.
The Delhi government also cancelled leave of all its employees till further orders due to the escalating hostilities.
In Himachal Pradesh, which shares a border with Punjab, security has been beefed up in bordering districts, including Hamirpur, Una and Bilaspur.
The Rajasthan government too has cancelled leave of administrative and police personnel deployed near the International Border and closed schools in five bordering districts.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia praised the Indian Armed Forces for their precision strike under 'Operation Sindoor' and said that this "war is a war to end terrorism".

Rajasthan: Leaves Cancelled, Schools Shut In 5 Border Districts
The Rajasthan government has cancelled administrative and police personnel's leaves deployed near the International Border and closed schools in five districts amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.
With high alert sounded in the border districts of western Rajasthan, a blackout has been instituted in these areas from midnight to 4 am till further orders as a safeguard against possible threat of air strikes.
Government and private schools have been closed in Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer districts as a precautionary measure, officials said on Thursday.
All Jodhpur colleges were also ordered to remain closed.
Operation Sindoor: Metal Debris Found At Fields In Amritsar Villages
Metal debris was found scattered in three villages of Amritsar district on Thursday, with some locals claiming them to be parts of missiles.
Police have maintained that the objects can be identified only after an investigation.
Locals in Jethuwal village said they found metal parts in some open fields and houses. Similar objects were found in Makhan Windi and Pandher villages as well.
No damage was caused to any property, they said.
Some locals claimed that they heard sound of explosions and saw lights flashing in the sky past midnight.
Operation Sindoor: China Urges India, Pakistan From "Further Complicating" Situation
China has urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that may "further complicate" the situation, as it asked the two neighbours to act in the "larger interests of peace and stability".
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing is concerned about the current developments.
"We urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability, observe international law, including the UN Charter, remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that may further complicate the situation," he said without elaborating.
"We stand ready to work with the rest of the international community to continue playing a constructive role in easing the current tensions," he added.
Operation Sindoor: Parliamentary Panels Adopt Resolutions Congratulating Armed Forces
Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday adopted a unanimous resolution congratulating the armed forces for pounding terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor.
PAC chairperson K C Venugopal said the resolution supporting and congratulating the armed forces for the operation was adopted in the first meeting of the newly-constituted panel for 2025-26.
Separately, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas also adopted a similar resolution.
"The success of Operation Sindoor bears testimony to the courage, bravery and valour of our armed forces and the resolve and commitment of the Government of India to root out terrorism and terror-related infrastructure from our neighbourhood," it read.

In their petitions, Mr Agrawal and Mr Jayarah also sought a claim on the logo, which was released by the Indian government on Wednesday. As a result, this application has been tagged with the "Vienna Codification" - a classification used when a trademark includes visual elements such as logos or designs, in line with the Vienna Agreement.
Reliance Industries Limited also filed the trademark application but withdrew it later. In a statement, it said the petition was filed inadvertently by a junior person without authorisation

At the press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the government has informed the United Nations about The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Pakistani terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which has claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack.
"When talks were going on about the Pahalgam attack at the UNSC, Pakistan opposed the role of TRF. This is after TRF claimed the responsibility of the attack not once, but twice. Our intention is not to escalate matters and we are only responding to the escalation. No military targets have been targeted; only terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan has been hit," he said.
He said that India's response to the Pahalgam strikes is "non-escalatory".

The Government of India and the Punjab Government have issued directives under the Civil Defence Act, 1968, to enforce a complete blackout in the Gurdaspur district from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, effective from May 8, 2025, until further orders.
The statement released said, "Due to a sensitive environment on the Indo-Pak border, guidelines of the Government of India and the Government of Punjab. According to this, further orders will be issued from 08.05.2025 to deal with the emergency situation under the Civil Defense Act 1968. Operation Sindoor: 90 Flights Cancelled At Delhi Airport Due To Closure Of Airspace
Several flights scheduled for arrival and departures from Delhi Airport were cancelled on Thursday due to the closure of airspace, said airport sources.
These 90 cancelled flights include 46 domestic departures and 33 domestic arrival flights while it included five international departure and six international arrival flights. These cancelled flights were scheduled between 8 am and 2 pm.
Several major cities across northern India have been placed on high alert. As part of heightened security measures, several airports across India have been shut down until further notice.

Operation Sindoor: Flying Of Drones, UAVs Banned In Leh Amid India-Pak Tensions
Authorities in the Union Territory of Ladakh have prohibited flying of drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Leh district, citing credible inputs and security concerns about their "potential misuse" by anti-national elements.
Leh District Magistrate Santosh Sukhadeve ordered the prohibition on flying of drones and UAVs by locals, tourists, or private persons and said any violation of the order shall attract strict legal action under relevant laws.
"This order is issued ex-parte in the interest of public safety and security and shall remain in force until further notice," he said.
The order was issued a day after Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

People in some border villages of Ferozepur district in Punjab have begun moving to safer areas amid soaring tensions between India and Pakistan.
Other villagers near the International Border (IB) with Pakistan in Amritsar and Tarn Taran border districts, however, exuded a sense of calmness with people going about with routine work.
Meanwhile, several residents in Amritsar and Batala resorted to panic buying of grocery items like pulses, cooking oil, wheat flour, sugar, and salt. People were seen queuing up at departmental stores and grocery shops for bulk buying.

Villagers in Ferozepur said they have begun shifting their belongings even though there has been no official evacuation orders from the Border Security Force, Indian Army, or any government agency so far.

Security Drills Held In Rajasthan To Test Emergency Preparedness
Security drills were carried out in two phases in cities of Rajasthan following directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs in which response time for rescue and relief work was checked.
At 4 pm, drills on air strikes and other forms of attack were held and at 8.30 pm, a 15-minute power blackout was witnessed.
At some places, police teams stopped vehicles and asked them to switch off their headlight. A railway spokesperson said trains parked at railway stations were halted for 15 minutes and during the blackout.
A similar scene was witnessed at Jaipur international airport also where except emergency lights, all other lights were switched off, an airport spokesperson said.
Security Drill Conducted As Part Of 'Operation Abhyas' In Bengaluru
Bengaluru authorities carried out a large-scale civil defence security drill at various locations in the city under 'Operation Abhyas' (Operation Exercise) in line with the direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
According to officials, soon after the siren blew at 3.48 pm at various locations, civil defence personnel, police, fire and emergency services swung into action.
The drill included rescue operations in the event of fire, removing people from beneath debris, evacuating people from high-rises, and providing medical emergency services.
The drill went on for about half an hour.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed police officials to remain on high alert and detain Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in the state.

Security Drills, Blackouts Conducted Across 18 Districts In Gujarat
Civil defence drills simulating air strikes and blackout exercises were conducted at vital installations across 18 districts of Gujarat on Wednesday to raise public awareness about emergency preparedness, officials said.
From 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, citizens in the 18 districts observed blackout exercises, voluntarily switching off lights for 30 minutes in staggered time slots, an official release stated.
In Ahmedabad, drills were carried out at the Vatva industrial area and a mall on the SG Highway. The exercise began with an air-raid siren, prompting evacuation drills led by police, civil defence, and fire personnel, who guided citizens on emergency protocols.

India on Wednesday closed about 25 flight routes that allow planes to enter Pakistan through the Indian airspace on a day when the armed forces launched missile attacks on terror targets in Pakistan, according to officials.
Against the backdrop of rising tensions between the two countries, many foreign airlines have been avoiding the Pakistan airspace. On April 30. India shut its airspace for Pakistan airline as part of retaliatory measures in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. On April 24, Pakistan closed its airspace for Indian carriers.
Three officials told PTI on Wednesday that around 25 flight routes that allow entry of aircraft into the Pakistan airspace have been closed until further notice. The closure will also mean that foreign carriers that were overflying Pakistan airspace after exiting the Indian airspace will have to take longer routes to their destinations, they said.
Airlines pay a certain fee to the civil aviation authority concerned of the country through which it is overflying.

Operation Sindoor Live Updates: Pakistan Shuts Down Airspace, Plans To Hit Back After India's Precision StrikesPakistan, in disbelief and distress after Indian armed forces missiles pummeled multiple terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as well as deep inside Pakistan, has decided to close down its airspace entirely.
So far, Pakistan had closed its airspace only for flights that are owned, leased, or operated by Indian carriers, but after India's precision strikes, Islamabad and Rawalpindi (Pak Army headquarters) have announced a total closure of the country's airspace for all countries, including its own civilian planes. Only some essential flights are reportedly being permitted.
The order, issued by Pakistan's aviation authority, states that Pakistan is now a no-fly zone for the next 48 hours. While Pakistan has called the move a precautionary measure, the country has vowed to retaliate. It must be noted that India's kinetic action against Pakistan was a response to Pakistan's links to cross-border terrorism which resulted in the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed. The attack was religiously-motivated, and came days after an inflammatory and communal speech by Pak Army chief Asim Munir.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted that everyone is together in the war on terror, and there should not be any differences among people.
Her comments came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's urgent meeting of chief ministers, chief secretaries and DGPs of states having borders with Pakistan and Nepal.

Pakistan Minister Attaullah Tarar's "No Terror Camps" Claim Gets Fact Checked On Live TVPakistan's Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar was left red-faced on live television after Sky News journalist Yalda Hakim fact-checked his country's history of supporting terrorist organisations, just hours after India's military action on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
During an appearance on Sky News, Tarar alleged that the Indian ministry targeted civilian areas - a claim that was dismantled by Hakim.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said women who lost their husbands in the Pahalgam terror attack got justice due to India's missile strikes in Pakistan and PoK.
"I salute the Indian armed forces and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as their decision and decisive power has honoured 140 crore Indians," Ms Gupta told reporters.

Operation Sindoor Live Updates: Delhi Airport Sees Cancellation Of 140 Flights
Around 140 flights to and from the Delhi airport were cancelled by various airlines, including foreign carriers, on Wednesday in the wake of the armed forces carrying out missile strikes on terror targets in Pakistan.
A source said that 65 arrivals and 66 departures were cancelled. Besides, two international departures and two international arrivals were cancelled during the day, the source added.
Also, four international departures, including a flight of American Airlines, were cancelled since 12 am.
"Due to changing airspace conditions some flights have been impacted. Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates and alternate travel arrangements.
"We are working closely with airlines and Air Traffic Control (ATC) to minimise any disruptions to flight schedules," DIAL said in a post on X.

Rajasthan On Alert After Operation Sindoor
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot were among several leaders who welcomed 'Operation Sindoor' carried out by the Indian Armed Forces in Pakistan.
Mr Sharma, who returned from Gujarat on Wednesday morning, chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the state's preparedness and issued instructions to tighten security following the operation.
He directed officials to cancel leaves of police personnel and ensure their presence at the headquarters. Officers were instructed to ensure full-proof security across the state, especially in border areas. "Rajasthan is a border state of Pakistan, therefore, the security system of the state should be in place by complying with the highest standards," he said.
Operation Sindoor Live Updates: "Where Will We Go", Ask Uri Locals After Heavy Pakistan ShellingIn the village of Salamabad, located barely ten kilometres from the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, the aftermath of recent artillery fire from across the border paints a grim picture. Two civilian homes have been obliterated by Pakistani shelling, with four people injured in the incident, including two children. All four have been evacuated to the district hospital in Baramulla, approximately 40 kilometres away.
A dense cloud of smoke still hangs over the ruins, evidence of fires still smouldering long after the shells landed. The signs of artillery impact are clear. Shrapnel has torn through metal rooftops and fragmented concrete walls. NDTV, speaking to locals on the ground, learned that at least one shell appeared to have exploded in the air, spreading white-hot metal shards in all directions. Twisted utensils, collapsed roofs, and damaged interiors, the destruction of these houses is near-total.
"Four people live in this house," said an elderly man, pointing at charred ruins. "Two children, a 13-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, were injured when, around 2 am, a Pakistani artillery shell fell on the house."
This damage occurred in a civilian settlement with no military presence. Local residents reiterated that the nearest army brigade is several kilometres behind the site of the shelling. "We are not soldiers. We are farmers. We have families here," one elderly villager said. "Where will we go?"
Haryana Conducts Security Drills Across All Districts
Haryana carried out a civil defence drill under 'Operation Abhyaas' as part of the nationwide exercise simulating multiple hostile scenarios like air raids, multiple fire emergencies and search and rescue operations.
In Faridabad, police commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta said civic agencies, police and other teams were involved in the drill, and they demonstrated how to operate in various kinds of emergency scenarios.
"With minimum equipment, how can one rescue? If there is a fire incident, how to rescue?...all these things were demonstrated," he said, while at the same time appealing to people not to panic or lend an ear to any kind of rumours.
Drills were also carried out in Gurugram, Panchkula, Ambala and Rohtak at busy shopping malls, marketplaces and other establishments.
Across the state, the exercise also commenced at key government installations, public sector units and other critical sites.
National Investigation Agency Asks People To Share Photos, Videos Of Pahalgam Terror Attack
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has appealed to all tourists, visitors and local people who might have any more information, photographs or videos relating to the Pahalgam terror attack to immediately contact it.
The probe agency has already taken possession of a sizable number of photographs and videos showing various aspects of the attack and is examining them, officials said.
NIA, which is officially in charge of the investigation into the terror attack, is keen to examine the content in thorough detail to search for any possible clues to the assailants and their modus operandi, they said.
"It has now decided to scale up its efforts even more intensely to ensure that no useful information or evidence is missed out in its investigation into the horrendous crime against humanity," it said in a statement.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India has scripted history by launching Operation Sindoor.

India Calls For Urgent Briefing Of Permanent, Non-Permanent UNSC Members On Operation Sindoor
India has called for an urgent briefing for permanent and non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council on Operation Sindoor.
Why Operation Sindoor Is Unlike Any Mission India Has Ever Carried OutUnlike the 2016 Uri surgical strikes, 2019 Balakot airstrikes, or other past Indian operations, which were limited in scale and scope, Operation Sindoor was technologically robust, expansive and unlike any mission India has ever carried out. The move to strike deep into Pakistan-occupied territory revealed one thing: a departure from prior doctrine.
Operation Sindoor was not only the most expansive cross-border strike conducted by India since the Balakot operation, but also represented an evolution in India's strategic posture.
"The sheer scale of militant loss sent a strong message to terrorist networks and their handlers. India now reserves the right to strike preemptively, and no location is beyond reach," a government source said.
Security Drills Held At 4 Schools In Kolkata
Evacuation drills were conducted by four private schools in Kolkata on Wednesday to assess the preparedness among students in case of an exigency on the backdrop of the tensions between India and Pakistan.
The drills were conducted at DPS-Ruby Park, La Martiniere for Boys, La Martiniere for Girls and Future Foundation School.
A spokesperson for the two La Martiniere schools said the drills were conducted by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) wings based on instructions from the government.
Students went through the process of evacuating their classroom after an alarm was sounded, assembling in the courtyard, and taking shelter. They returned to their classrooms once the all-clear signal was given, he said.
"The entire exercise took place within 30 minutes, to make students well-versed about procedures required in case of an emergency. Students were very enthusiastic and eager to participate in the exercise," he added.

Former Puducherry Lieutenant Governor and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi applauded the India Armed Forces on successful execution of the Operation Sindoor, and said the initiative taken was an "action" and not a reaction.
"Nine sites were attacked and nine of those locations were terror factories. The Government of India did exactly what they said. This is not a reaction but an action. It was done after a planning of 15 days... This is the capability of the government of India...," she said.
