The Supreme Court today made strong remarks on the toxic air quality in the national capital, calling for urgent steps to tackle the menace.
Against the backdrop of political differences and their role in blocking a proper resolution to the problem, the court said, "This can't become a political battle. It's a murder of people's health."
Directing state governments to take immediate steps to stop stubble burning, the court said, "We want it stopped. We don't know how you do it, it's your job. But it must be stopped. Something has to be done immediately."
The court also pulled up Delhi government. "Delhi government also must be responsible. There are many buses running that pollute and run at half capacity. You have to attend to the problem," it said.
The court also commented on the odd-even scheme announced by Delhi government to check the pollution levels. Schemes like odd-even for vehicles to tackle pollution issue are "mere optics", the court said.
The court also asked if paddy cultivation can be stopped in Punjab. "The crop is destroying the water table of the state," it said.

Asian News InternationalDelhi air quality: Of the total 38 monitoring stations, 34 were in the 'red zone', indicating 'very poor' to 'severe' air quality.
Despite a 77.5 per cent drop in stubble burning, i.e., agricultural waste - normally a significant reason for air pollution in Delhi during the winter - AQI in the national capital plummeted to a five-year post-Diwali low Tuesday morning.
Nutritionist Lovneet Batra has shared a simple Ayurvedic drink on Instagram that, she says, may help soothe the respiratory tract and protect the lungs from pollution damage.
The festive season, coupled with seasonal weather changes and increased stubble burning in neighbouring states, has exacerbated pollution levels, prompting calls for preventive measures.
As Delhi's air quality drops again, these 11 hill stations offer clean air, calm views and mountain peace after Diwali.

Tuesday December 10, 2024Delhi welcomed us with monsoon rains and mangos. We were home. Fast forward a couple of years, in the winter of 2012, I found myself in denial about something other parents, mostly expats, were calling toxic air.
