Delhi is back to breathing toxic air with the capital's air quality index in the severe category and concentration of the fine, cancer-causing pollutant spiking to emergency levels. The PM 2.5 pollutant, which penetrates the lungs and causes chronic respiratory illnesses, is nearly 100 times the safe limit set by World Health Organisation. Long-term exposure to this micro-pollutant can even cause lung cancer. This comes just two days after curbs imposed in Delhi-NCR to tackle the pollution levels were lifted following improvement in the air. Given that air pollution is likely to worsen in the coming days, restrictions are back in place in the national capital. Vedanta reports from Anand Vihar in New Delhi.

Primary schools in Delhi will switch to online learning mode from Friday due to severe air pollution in the national capital, Chief Minister Atishi announced in a post on X.
Delhi and its adjoining areas have been covered under a blanket of thick smog since last morning and the air quality has plummeted to the 'Severe' category and the air quality index reported over 400 in several areas.
Delhi has enforced tighter rules to control air pollution after the air quality index, or AQI, reached the 'severe' category. All non-essential construction and demolition work are banned, among other actions.
Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was in Kerala's Wayanad for her first electoral contest, said returning to Delhi amid the toxic air pollution was "like entering a gas chamber".
घर में कैद बुजुर्ग और हांफते लोग, दिल्ली की सांसों में घुला ये कैसा रोग?Nidhi Kulpati
